Diski Team Smash Two Past Gallants to Extend their Winning Streak
Mamelodi Sundowns’ Diski Team ended their weekend on a high note, following a 2-0 triumph against the Marumo Gallants Reserves at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. Goals from Bennet Mokoena β who is now on 20 goals this season β and Oarabile Booysen helped Downs walk away with all points on offer.
It was the host that pulled a trigger first when Ntokozo Siquba made a cross to find Mokoena in front of goal but he missed the ball by a beat as it found the keeper’s hands.
Soon after that, from the counter, Gallants took the ball to the opposite side. They triggered a shot but the Downs goalkeeper, Zakhele Shabangu, managed to block the ball from going past him.
The hosts were applying pressure and were creating chances but were just unlucky to not score. Kabelo Sibande came close when he fired a shot which was intercepted by one of the defender’s chests.
Finally, on the 18th minute, the hosts opened the scoring. While trying to clear the ball, the Gallants defender tried to clear but it went towards goal. The keeper tried to block what was supposed to be clearance but it spilled over his hands, leading to Mokoena taking advantage and toe-poking the ball in.
Following end-to-end football where Bafana Ba Style had the most chances, it is the hosts that went to the interval with a goal advantage.
Eight minutes into the second stanza, Masandawana almost doubled their advantage when Thato Sibiya made a cross intended to find Mokoena. Mokoena, however, mistimed the pass as he missed it by a few inches.
The young Brazilians continued dominating possession and kept the opponents away from their half.
Substitute, Oarabile Booysen tested the goalkeeper from a tight angle on the right flank. The keeper, however, put his body on the line to block the effort.
On the 76th minute, after being denied multiple times by the backline, the hosts doubled their advantage. Assisted by Shabangu who lobbed the ball over the many bodies to the other half, Booysen connected with the ball and drove it to the box He went past the goalkeeper to slot it in.
It didnβt take time before Gallants looked o retaliate but Liam Marthinus, the Downs defender cleared the ball. The visitors’ biggest chance followed, causing a scramble in the box, but the hosts managed to clear the danger away.
The final action of the match came in a form of a free-kick on the edge of the box. This came after a foul leading to Malibongwe Khoza being sent off by the referee. The ball, however sailed over the bar, concluding the match at 2-0 in favour of Bafana Ba Style.
