The competition was established in 1982/83 and has operated under numerous names and sponsors over its history, including the Datsun Challenge, the JPS Knockout Cup, the Coca-Cola Cup, the Rothmans Cup, and then the Telkom Knockout from 2006 until 2019. After a short break it returned in 2023 under Carling sponsorship. The competition includes all 16 Premiership clubs and is played as a straight knockout.
Mamelodi Sundowns have won the competition twice, both in the Telkom Knockout era: in 2014/15 and 2018/19. Their most recent triumph came in 2019, shortly before the tournament was paused. Since its relaunch as the Carling Knockout Cup, Sundowns’ best run was to the final in 2024.
